Later this year, the first issue of a comic book based on Slayer’s revenge-themed music videos, “Repentless” and “You Against You”, will be available. Both of the videos share a story arc that was devised by director BJ McDonnell, best known for “Hatchet III”. The group, along with their record label Nuclear Blast Records, have teamed with comic-book publishers Dark Horse for this three-part series.
Guitarist Kerry Kings says: “I think of the songs I write as stories. And if nothing else, they are certainly visual. BJ managed to string it all together so it made sense.”
Former “Metalocalypse” director, Jon Schnepp, who previously ran Avenged Sevenfold’s animated series based on “Hail to the King” as well as the “Downfall” video for Exodus, has written the comics.
King went on to say: “My philosophy as far as anybody working on anything regarding Slayer, be it the album cover art or video concepts, is to let the people who do that for a living do it. “That’s how we started working with (cover artist) Larry Carroll for ‘Reign In Blood’, ‘South Of Heaven’ and ‘Seasons In The Abyss’. We gave him song titles, lyrics, just things to put ideas in his head.”
He also admitted that he was never much of a comic book fan. “I’ve got a handful from when I was super young and then a handful from the early nineties when I got back into collecting sports stuff, but certainly not a ton of them,” said King. “I love comic-book movies, be it ‘X-Men’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Iron Man’, ‘Thor’, since those are always killer.”
Slayer will be staging a takeover of San Diego Comic-Con International beginning on Thursday, July 21, with a live performance at the House of Blues. They will also hold two, very exclusive signings inside of Comic-Con, along with Dark Horse Comics, taking place on Friday, July 22, at their booth and their label’s.
